Impressions Upon the Water

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.
In my training for REBT, the teachings of ancient Stoic philosopher Epictetus have been recited quite a bit. Overlap with REBT principles and The Daily Stoic have thus re-familiarized me with his lessons. As an example, authors of The Daily Stoic quote Epictetus who stated (page 74):
The soul is like a bowl of water, and our impressions are like the ray of light falling upon the water. When the water is troubled, it appears that the light itself is moved too, but it isn’t. So, when a person loses their composure it isn’t their skills and virtues that are troubled, but the spirit in which they exist, and when that spirit calms down so do those things.
The ABC model draws upon the wisdom of Epictetus to express that when an undesirable event occurs and you maintain an unhelpful belief about the situation, it’s your impression – not the circumstance itself – that leads to self-disturbance (the unpleasant consequence of your belief).
Epictetus illustrated this process using a simile regarding a bowl of water. Light may dance upon the water, though a ray of light doesn’t actually disturb it. Rather, one’s own interpretation of the event is what causes disturbance. About this matter, authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 74):
You messed up a little. Or maybe you messed up a lot. So? That doesn’t change the philosophy that you know. It’s not as if your reasoned choice has permanently abandoned you. Rather, it was you who temporarily abandoned it.
Remember that the tools and aims of our training are unaffected by the turbulence of the moment. Stop. Regain your composure. It’s waiting for you.
Even if a bowl of water is turbulently jostled, the motion of turbulence isn’t something that lasts forever. Therefore, light, jostling, and other elements which occur during your lifetime are momentary in nature. During such relatively brief moments, how do you prefer to respond?
