How to Restart Life

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.
Do you ever wish that you could start all over again in life? Many people have desired to do so. Some have actually succeeded. Of this matter, authors of The Daily Stoic highlight a quote from ancient Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius who stated (page 34):
Your principles can’t be extinguished unless you snuff out the thoughts that feed them, for it’s continually in your power to reignite new ones. . . . It’s possible to start living again! See things anew as you once did—that is how to restart life!
Rather than discussing a literal restart to life or the spiritual rebirth addressed by world some religions, a virtual reset to life is possible through changing your perspective. Expanding upon this concept, authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 34):
[T]he reminder here is that no matter what happens, no matter how disappointing our behavior has been in the past, the principles themselves remain unchanged. We can return and embrace them at any moment. What happened yesterday—what happened five minutes ago—is the past. We can reignite and restart whenever we like.
When promoting practice or REBT, I invite people to consider that what they believe about undesirable events is what creates cognitive, emotive, sensational, and behavioral outcomes. These consequences of belief affect how one interprets the experience of life.
Unhelpfully, many people use irrational beliefs when self-disturbing about how awful their living moments supposedly are. Thus, these individuals tend to unfavorably conclude that life is worthless.
Rather than vigorously disputing these unproductive beliefs, suppose that one used the elegant solution by affirming the self-disturbed proposition. Okay, so your life is awful and it’s therefore without worth. Fine. Is there anything you can do to proverbially restart life? If so, do that.
