Clarity in Seeing What Others Overlook

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

 

When you think of death, what comes to mind? Do you envision a catastrophic event? Perhaps you imagine beautiful peacefulness. About this topic, authors of The Daily Stoic feature a quote from Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius who stated (page 32):

 

Pass through this brief patch of time in harmony with nature, and come to your final resting place gracefully, just as a ripened olive might drop, praising the earth that nourished it and grateful to the tree that gave it growth.

 

I think the philosopher’s perspective eloquently reframes how so many other people view death. Maybe this is because people focus too heavily on the active process of immediately dying, or perhaps on what (if anything) occurs after one has transitioned from life to death.

 

This is understandable, given the impermanent and uncertain nature of life. “Will I be pushed from atop a tall building, panicking as I plunge toward the ground?” a person may imagine while self-disturbing through use of irrational beliefs about how meaningless such an end may be.

 

Another individual may unfavorably conclude, “It would be awful not being here to see my children’s children and what they will become.” Unproductive outlooks such as these obscure the experience of death itself. Personally, there’s no available evidence to draw such conclusions.

 

Rather, religious faiths offer conjecture. Philosophers, theorists, and intellectuals engage in speculation. Commoners, such as you and me, merely assume what death is all about. However, I remain skeptical about whether or not anyone actually knows if death will be horrendous.

 

Therefore, I appreciate consideration of curious perception in this regard. For instance, I like that authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 32):

 

It takes an artist’s eye to see that the end of life is not unlike a ripe fruit falling from its tree. It takes a poet to notice the way “baking bread splits in places and those cracks, while not intended in the baker’s art, catch our eye and serve to stir our appetite” and find a metaphor in them.

 

Marcus Aurelius used a metaphor related to a ripened olive upon its final resting place concerning death. To me, seeing what others overlook as a potentially beautiful end to a life punctuated by distress and disturbance is preferable. Authors of The Daily Stoic conclude (page 32):

 

There is clarity (and joy) in seeing what others can’t see, in finding grace and harmony in places others overlook. Isn’t that far better than seeing the world as some dark place?

 

To this, I add that viewing death (not only the world) from the standpoint curiosity rather than certainty is how to un-disturb oneself. Thus, clarity in seeing what others overlook brings me contentment, as I’m interested in seeing what comes next (if anything). How about you?
