You Have Options

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

 

The authors quote Seneca who stated, “Nothing is noble if it’s done unwillingly or under compulsion. Every noble deed is voluntary” (page 225). “Noble” means having, characterized by, arising from, or indicating superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals.

 

What is it that you tell yourself when faced with a challenging circumstance? “I gotta do this” or “I better do that” are phrases of demandingness which people often use. Regarding similar unwilling- or compulsory-driven self-narratives, authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 225):

 

You don’t have to do the right thing. You always have the option to be selfish, rude, awful, shortsighted, pedantic, evil, or stupid. In fact, sometimes there are incentives to break bad. Certainly, not every criminal gets caught.

 

You can cheat yourself by not studying for exams. You can also rob yourself of intimacy by not imitating conversations with potential romantic interests. After all, you have options (the power or right to choose: freedom of choice). Of this, authors of The Daily Stoic conclude (page 225):

 

But how does this line of thinking usually work out for people? What’s that life like? You don’t have to do the right thing, just as you don’t have to do your duty. You get to. You want to.

 

You wanna have better grades? Then you get to study. You wanna begin dating someone? Then do what you want to do, not what your mind demands that you have to do. I encourage you to practice this Stoic perspective shift… if you want success. Bear in mind, you have options.
