Chop Logic

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

 

Gaius Musonius Rufus stated, “When the problem arose for us whether habit or theory was better for getting virtue—if by theory is meant what teaches us correct conduct, and by habit we mean being accustomed to act according to this theory—Musonius thought habit to be more effective” (page 246).

 

What are your habits when navigating the complexity of a problem? Is this even something about which you’ve thought? Has it occurred to you that you may be making matters worse by fixating on minute details of an issue? Sharing their view, authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 246):

 

As Hamlet says,

 

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

 

There is no time to chop logic over whether our theories are correct. We’re dealing with the real world here. What matters is how you’re going to deal with this situation right in front of you and whether you’re going to be able to move past it and onto the next one. That’s not saying that anything goes—but we can’t forget that although theories are clean and simple, situations rarely are.

 

“Chop logic” occurs when one argues with sophistical reasoning and minute distinctions. This unhelpful approach to problem solving tends to make matters overly complex. Don’t get me wrong; there is still room for thinking that is rational (in accordance with both logic and reason).

 

Here, “logic” is the interrelation or sequence of facts or events when seen as inevitable or predictable, and “reason” is a statement offered in explanation or justification. Still, people sometimes fixate a bit too much on details rather than on resolving whatever problem is at hand.

 

Given this relatively brief consideration, what are your habits when navigating the complexity of a problem? Do you make matters more tedious than they already are? If so, why not forego chop logic in the moment and actually resolve the problem at hand?
