Deep Inside

As Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is informed by Stoic philosophy, this blog entry is part of an ongoing series regarding a book entitled The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

 

Authors of The Daily Stoic quote ancient Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius who stated, “Today I escaped from the crush of circumstances, or better put, I threw them out, for the crush wasn’t from outside me but in my own assumptions” (page 94).

 

When thinking of Aurelius’s proposition, I’m reminded of an electronic dance music (EDM) track by Hardrive, reportedly an alias for house music producer Little Louie Vega, called “Deep Inside” from 1993. The repetitive lyrics state “deep inside, deep, deep down inside.”

 

This relates to the ABC model of REBT which illustrates how when an undesirable Action occurs and you maintain an unhelpful Belief about it, it’s your assumption, not the event itself, which causes an unpleasant Consequence. Thus, you disturb yourself deep, deep inside.

 

When providing psychoeducational lessons about how people upset themselves “deep inside, deep, deep down inside,” I rely on Stoic principles to guide my teaching. Demonstrating these heuristics, authors of The Daily Stoic state (page 94):

 

On tough days we might say, “My work is overwhelming,” or “My boss is really frustrating.” If only we could understand that this is impossible.

 

Someone can’t frustrate you, work can’t overwhelm you—these are external objects, and they have no access to your mind. Those emotions you feel, as real as they are, come from the inside, not the outside.

 

When experiencing the Belief-Consequence connection, you disturb yourself “deep inside, deep, deep down inside,” though elements outside of you cannot cause self-upset. About this matter, authors of The Daily Stoic conclude (page 94):

 

The Stoics use the word hypolêpsis, which means “taking up”—of perceptions, thoughts, and judgments by our mind. What we assume, what we willingly generate in our mind, that’s on us.

 

We can’t blame other people for making us feel stressed or frustrated any more than we can blame them for our jealousy. The cause is within us. They’re just the target.

 

When disturbing yourself with unfavorable beliefs held “deep inside, deep, deep down inside,” I invite you to take personal responsibility and accountability for your reaction to undesirable circumstances. Once you take ownership of how you respond, then you can un-disturb yourself.
