My, My, My: If I Could Turn Back Time

The electronic dance music (EDM) song “My My My”, by house music producer and DJ Armand van Helden, from his album Nympho (2005), contains a sample of the song “Comin’ Apart” by Gary Wright from the album The Right Place (1981). I like the line “ooh, ooh-wee!”

For context, “ooh-wee” (also spelled oohwee, ooowee, or hoo-wee) is an informal interjection used to express intense excitement, admiration, astonishment, or joy. As an example, “Ooh-wee, I’m glad you’ve taken a moment to read this post!” is an expression of excitement.

Similarly, “my, my, my” (sometimes written as “my, my”) is an interjection phrase used to express surprise, amazement, admiration, or even gentle disapproval. A reduplicated, emphatic form of the exclamation “My!” (or “My, oh my!”), the phrase is similar to “well, well, well.”

Aside from appreciating how van Helden sampled Wright’s “ooh, ooh-wee” line, I’m keen on how versatile the expression “my, my, my” is. For example, “My, my, my, you’re actually taking time out of your day to read this blogpost?” can be used to express pleasant surprise.

Likewise, “My, my, my, you’ve learned nothing from my blog, if you continually self-disturb with irrational beliefs about how poorly I write” can be used to convey gentle disapproval. The simple lyrics from the original version of “My My My” are quite adaptable!

All the same, an alternative version of “My My My”, stylized as “MyMyMy” featured additional vocals from Tara McDonald, and was released in 2006. On the pre-chorus, McDonald states:

Spending all my time

Tryin’ to make it into what it was before

If I could turn back time

You will be the first to know, the only one worth waiting for

When contemplating these lyrics, a psychoeducational lesson on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) comes to my, my, mind. (Ooh-we! Could it have been helped? Did I have to go there? Oh well, I did!) In particular, I think of a hypothetical syllogism:

Form –

If p, then q; if q, then r; therefore, if p, then r.

Example –

Major premise: If I could turn back time (p), then I’d share my ability with the only one worth waiting for until then (q).

Minor premise: If I’d share my ability with the only one worth waiting for until then (q), then you will be the first to know (r).

Conclusion: Therefore, if I could turn back time (p), then you will be the first to know (r).

I relate this syllogistic belief to the practice of REBT, as it regards unconditional life-acceptance (ULA). Specifically, ULA acknowledges how fallible human beings have no control or influence over matters of the past. In essence, the past is passed, and there’s no turning back time.

Therefore, although it may be fun to pretend as though one can rewind time and let others know about this otherworldly ability, unconditionally accepting life as it is—an experience that can be lived only in the here-and-now—is a matter of rational living. Ooh, ooh-wee, that’s empowering!

Instead of wasting this moment by fantasizing about time travel, you can make appropriate changes right now! My, my, my, you just may’ve learned something in this blogpost that could alter your life in a meaningful way! With hope, you’ll frequently practice ULA. Ooh, ooh-wee!
