We All Gon' Go One Day

Irrespective of whether or not I’m working with clients on any given day, I practice Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)—even in my dreams. For instance, I continually remind myself about the importance of tolerance and acceptance regarding most conditions in life.

 

For context, REBT uses unconditional acceptance (UA) to relieve self-induced suffering. This is accomplished through use of unconditional self-acceptance (USA), unconditional other-acceptance (UOA), and unconditional life-acceptance (ULA).

 

With my approach to REBT, I incorporate author Stephen Covey’s concepts regarding the circles of control, influence, and concern, as well as an area of no concern. UA maps onto the circle of control (USA), circle of influence (UOA), and circle of concern and area of no concern (ULA).

 

The circle of control encompasses only oneself, the circle of influence encapsulates elements which may be subject to one’s sway, the circle of concern engrosses most matters one can imagine, and the area of no concern relates to all content which isn’t yet imagined.

 

For a pragmatic example of how I practice UA, consider that earlier I listened to the album GUNS&BUTTER (2022) by rapper Al.Divino. Specifically, I practiced REBT when listening to the track “SLIMEFIERI” on which he states “we all gon’ go one day” concerning death.

 

While many people self-distress or self-disturb with irrational beliefs about their inescapable end to living, I don’t. As well, I’m not indifferent to my unavoidable death. Rather, I’m looking forward to the end of my existence, because I’ve practiced eudaimonia (living well).

 

I’ve attained this healthy perspective by acknowledging that I have control over my beliefs about dying (USA). As well, I have little influence over whether or not others accept my death (UOA). Further, I recognize that each and every living being will inevitably die (ULA).

 

Perhaps you don’t eagerly anticipate your expected demise. That’s fine. Can you achieve a level of indifference to death? If not, and you choose to healthily distress (i.e., exhibit mild concern), then that’s natural. But, why would you disturb (i.e., maintain dread)? We all gon’ go one day!
