M.I.N.D.

When listening to an electronic dance music (EDM) DJ set by Valentina Aguiar, I heard her spin the track “Mind” (2024) by Rafael Vilches. It was then that I thought of a psychoeducational lesson regarding the mind, which the American Psychological Association (APA) defines as:

 

[B]roadly, all intellectual and psychological phenomena of an organism, encompassing motivational, affective, behavioral, perceptual, and cognitive systems; that is, the organized totality of an organism’s mental and psychic processes and the structural and functional cognitive components on which they depend.

 

The term, however, is also used more narrowly to denote only cognitive activities and functions, such as perceiving, attending, thinking, problem solving, language, learning, and memory.

 

The nature of the relationship between the mind and the body, including the brain and its mechanisms or activities, has been, and continues to be, the subject of much debate.

 

When contemplating the M.I.N.D., as I’m framing the topic through the lens of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), I think of Maintaining Irrationality, Not Disputing. In order to comprehend what I mean, it may be of some use to discuss one of the major tools of REBT.

 

Specifically, REBT uses the ABC model to illustrate that when an undesirable Action occurs and you Believe an unhelpful narrative about the event, it’s your unfavorable assumption, not the occurrence itself, that causes an unpleasant Consequence. This is known as self-disturbance.

 

Addressing how people upset themselves with unhelpful attitudes, the ABC model incorporates Disputation of unproductive philosophies of life in order to explore Effective new beliefs. Whereas rigid beliefs cause self-disturbance, flexible beliefs result in an un-disturbed condition.

 

Regarding the M.I.N.D., I describe irrationality as beliefs which aren’t in accordance with both logic and reason. Logic is the interrelation or sequence of facts or events when seen as inevitable or predictable, and reason is a statement offered in explanation or justification.

 

When Maintaining Irrationality, an individual retains a flawed form of validity (the quality of being well-grounded, sound, or correct) when using illogical and/or unreasonable beliefs. Not Disputing these irrational beliefs is what figuratively causes a person to lose one’s mind.

 

Therefore, I encourage you to explore my blogpost entitled On Disputing, as well as my blog category entitled Disputation, as a method learning to maintain rationality through disputing irrational beliefs. Otherwise, the M.I.N.D. will do as it does. And that’s not very helpful at all.
