Losing It

When listening to an electronic dance music (EDM) DJ set by DJ Luane, I heard her spin the Henry Himself remix “Losing It (Henry Himself Remix)” (2025) of Fisher’s original track “Losing It” (2018). Repetitively, the lyrics state, “I’m losing it!”

 

The phrase “losing it” is the past participle of “lose it,” as in “falling apart,” which means to yield to mental or emotional stress. For example, person X lost it when he was told there’d be yet another delay. As well, person Y lost her shit when her order was wrong at the drive-through.

 

When practicing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), I assist individuals with understanding that events outside of themselves aren’t want result in people losing it. To illustrate this matter, I’ll draw upon the hypothetical examples of persons X and Y.

 

REBT uses the ABC model to illustrate that when an undesirable Action occurs and you Believe an unhelpful narrative about the event, it’s your unfavorable assumption, not the occurrence itself, that causes an unpleasant Consequence. This is known as distress or disturbance.

 

In particular, there are four predominate irrational beliefs which people often use to distress or disturb themselves: global evaluations, low frustration tolerance, awfulizing, and demandingness. When contemplating these unproductive scripts, think of the acronym GLAD.

 

As an example, person X is told that there’ll be yet another delay for his flight (Action) and he unhelpfully Believes, “This airline is worthless [G], and I can’t abide another delay [L], as it’s terrible that I’ve waited too long, as is [A], because I should be in the air by now [D]!”

 

Similarly, person Y’s fast food drive-through order is wrong (Action) and she unproductively Believes, “These fast food workers are useless [G], and I can’t stand that they have the damn nerve to ask me for a tip [L], as they’re awful [A], and they shouldn’t even have a job [D]!”

 

In instances of both GLAD self-narratives, persons X and Y “lose it” by experiencing negative and unhealthy anger and aggression (Consequence). Because their reactions have Consequences, each person’s recorded crashout behavior goes viral on social media. How unfortunate!

 

Addressing how people upset themselves with unhelpful attitudes, the ABC model incorporates Disputation of unproductive philosophies of life in order to explore Effective new beliefs. Whereas rigid beliefs cause self-disturbance, flexible beliefs result in an un-disturbed condition.

 

Fortunately, having read this blogpost, you now likely comprehend that “losing it” is a matter that remains within your control, not anyone else’s. Therefore, if you lose your shit, then that’s on you! How about instead of losing anything, you alternatively find Effective new beliefs?
