Arousal: Negative, but Unhealthy Aversion – Fuck It!

In the black comedy crime action-horror film From Dusk till Dawn (1996), directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino from a concept and story by Robert Kurtzman, Cheech Marin plays a character named Chet Pussy, working as a doorman at the Titty Twister.

At this upstanding establishment /s, also known as La Tetilla del Diablo, outlaws, bikers, and truckers are lured to the bar for unsuspecting nights of debauchery. Herein, I won’t provide any significant spoilers. Yet, what I will say is that, upon its release, I laughed quite a bit at the film.

In one scene, Chet Pussy stands outside of the Titty Twister and beacons passersby with the promise of pussy (vulgar: vulva—the external parts of the female genital organs). Specifically, facilitating sex industry endeavors, Chet Pussy states:

All right, pussy, pussy, pussy! Come on in, pussy lovers! Here at the Titty Twister, we’re slashing pussy in half! Give us an offer on our vast selection of pussy, this is a pussy blow out!

All right, we got white pussy, black pussy, Spanish pussy, yellow pussy, we got hot pussy, cold pussy, we got wet pussy, we got [sniffs] smelly pussy, we got hairy pussy, bloody pussy, we got snappin’ pussy, we got silk pussy, velvet pussy, Naugahyde pussy, we even got horse pussy, dog pussy, chicken pussy!

Come on, you want pussy, come on in, pussy lovers! If we don’t got it, you don't want it! Come on in, pussy lovers!

[…and in a later scene…] Attention, pussy shoppers, take advantage of our penny pussy sale! If you buy one piece of pussy at the regular price, you get another piece of pussy of equal or lesser value for only a penny! Try and beat pussy for a penny! If you can find cheaper pussy anywhere, fuck it!

For context, in this respect, the phrase “fuck it” serves as a double entendre (a word or expression capable of two interpretations with one usually risqué). For example, “fuck” is an obscene term for copulation (engagement in sexual intercourse). Thus, to “fuck it” is to copulate.

Also, one source states that the phrase “fuck it” is an “expression of great indifference or nonchalance.” Thus, when Chet Pussy suggested “if you can find cheaper pussy anywhere, fuck it,” he humorously said that one can fuck another woman, as he was indifferent to the matter.

Years after the release of From Dusk till Dawn, when I dabbled in the act of DJing electronic dance music (EDM) for a brief period of time, DJ Balloon released the track “Pussy Lover” (sometimes referred to as “Pussylovers”), in 1999 or 2000. It featured samples from the film.

Now, reflecting on Chet Pussy’s double entendre and DJ Balloon’s song, I think of a psychoeducational lesson regarding Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Noteworthy, the American Psychological Association (APA) thusly defines arousal:

1. a state of physiological activation or cortical responsiveness, associated with sensory stimulation and activation of fibers from the reticular activating system.

2. a state of excitement or energy expenditure linked to an emotion. Usually, arousal is closely related to a person’s appraisal of the significance of an event or to the physical intensity of a stimulus. Arousal can either facilitate or debilitate performance. See also catastrophe theory. —arouse vb.

Now, REBT uses the ABC model to illustrate that when an undesirable Action occurs and you Believe an unhelpful narrative about the event, it’s your unfavorable assumption, not the event itself, that causes an unpleasant Consequence. This is known as distress or disturbance.

In particular, there are four predominate irrational beliefs which people often use to distress or disturb themselves: global evaluations, low frustration tolerance, awfulizing, and demandingness. When contemplating these unproductive scripts, think of the acronym GLAD.

Additionally, from a psychological standpoint, people distress or disturb themselves using a Belief-Consequence (B-C) connection. Of course, this isn’t to suggest that in the context of the naturalistic or physical world there is no Action-Consequence (A-C) connection.

From an A-C view, you read this blogpost that appears to advocate the act of sex work (Action), as you don’t like or love what I’ve expressed herein (Consequence). Yet, it’s a B-C connection that causes your negative, but unhealthy reaction of aversion—which the APA thusly defines:

[A] physiological or emotional response indicating dislike for a stimulus. It is usually accompanied by withdrawal from or avoidance of the objectionable stimulus (an aversion reaction). —aversive adj.

For instance, you read many instances of the word “pussy” herein (Action), Believe, “Deric is useless [G], and I can’t abide him [L], because it’s horrendous how he references sex work [A], as he shouldn’t [D],” and you’re aroused to negative, but unhealthy aversion (Consequence).

Addressing how people upset (i.e., arouse) themselves with unhelpful attitudes, the ABC model uses Disputation of unproductive philosophies of life in order to explore Effective new beliefs. Whereas rigid beliefs cause self-disturbance, flexible beliefs result in an un-disturbed condition.

Suppose that instead of using irrational Beliefs which cause disturbance, you use a rational and Effective new belief, which causes distress in the form of negative, though healthy aversion, by maintaining, “Deric’s free to say what he wants, so fuck it!” You’d then simply stop reading.

Which Consequence of your Beliefs would you rather experience – irrationally self-disturbed aversion or rationally self-distressed aversion? Either way, you’ll endure a negative outcome. This is how life works. We can’t necessarily control or influence the Actions we experience.

Nevertheless, we can control how we react to displeasing events! Now, imagine that Chet Pussy is standing next to you, selling pussy. How will you choose to react or be aroused? Will you opt for negative, though healthy aversion by simply walking away from the procurer of pussy?

Or will you choose negative, but unhealthy aversion by storming off after punching Chet Pussy in the face? Bear in mind that the procurer of pussy said, “Try and beat pussy for a penny! If you can find cheaper pussy anywhere, fuck it,” not “try and beat me when you’re self-disturbed!”

Therefore, fuck it! If you find something disagreeable, then you can practice negative, though healthy aversion by simply disengaging. Now, I encourage you to practice this ABC model lesson in your own life. Go on, get off of my blog. Go, practice! Or, don’t. Fuck it!
