Sick of All, You Had Enough

When listening to an electronic dance music (EDM) DJ set by Celiá, I heard her spin the track “Before My Eyes” (2025) by Goom Gum and Dancing on Lego. In part, the lyrics state “sick of all, you had enough” and “pick up all you have in love.”
When used flexibly, the phrases “sick of all” and “had enough” infer that an individual is tremendously frustrated, annoyed, disappointed, etc. with a situation. However, when used rigidly, the same inference applies though results in anger, rage, depression, etc.
Adding to this phrase is “pick up all you have in love,” which likely alludes to one’s decision to go in a different direction than an intimate partner. Herein, using the cited lyrics, I’ll offer a relatively brief psychoeducational lesson on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).
REBT uses the ABC model to illustrate that when an undesirable Action occurs and you Believe an unhelpful narrative about the event, it’s your unfavorable assumption, not the occurrence itself, that causes an unpleasant Consequence. This is known as distress or disturbance.
In particular, there are four predominate irrational beliefs which people often use to distress or disturb themselves: global evaluations, low frustration tolerance (LFT), awfulizing, and demandingness. When contemplating these unproductive scripts, think of the acronym GLAD.
For example, person X is dissatisfied in a romantic relationship with person Y (Action). Inflexibly, person X Believes, “I’m sick of all this,” indicating an LFT narrative, and, “I’ve had enough,” inferring the demand “I absolutely mustn’t stay in this relationship.”
This rigid script then causes the unpleasant Consequence of disturbance (anger, rage, depression, etc.). Many people may consider this an appropriate response to dissatisfaction regarding an intimate partner relationship, as songs are written and films are made in support of this outcome.
Addressing how people upset themselves with unhelpful attitudes, the ABC model incorporates Disputation of unproductive philosophies of life in order to explore Effective new beliefs. Whereas rigid beliefs cause self-disturbance, flexible beliefs result in an un-disturbed condition.
Unlike the popular trope of unhelpful reactions to undesirable circumstances with which so many people are apparently accustomed, I’d rather experience mere distress than disturbance in person X’s situation – given the distinction between healthy and unhealthy negative emotions.
For instance, person X is dissatisfied in a romantic relationship with person Y (Action). Flexibly, person X Believes, “Aside from something like an event during which I’m poisoned, no undesirable situation is capable of making me sick,” indicating high frustration tolerance (HFT).
As well, person X concludes, “It isn’t as though I absolutely mustn’t stay in this relationship. Rather, I preferably should leave, because it isn’t serving my interests and goals,” indicating a healthy preference rather than unhealthy demandingness.
This flexible Belief then causes the tolerable Consequence of disturbance (frustrated, annoyed, disappointed, etc.). Now, I invite you to consider flexible HFT narratives rather than inflexible LFT scripts. If you’d like to know more about REBT, then I look forward to hearing from you.
